Care Info
Any person who has ever been fascinated by observing a turtle or tortoise and who subsequently aspires to possess one should first and foremost research the specific species desired. The acquisition of a tortoise or turtle must be considered fully in all aspects:

Topics For Consideration:
Keeping chelonians is not an inexpensive proposition. In all areas we strive to replicate their natural habitat and diet as closely as possible. In addition, before acquiring a chelonian, one should first inquire of a local Exotics Veterinarian if he/she is experienced in the care and treatment of "turtles" and ask about the basic office visit fee. Currently, an office visit with a qualified turtle vet in Albuquerque runs $60 and up plus medications and tax.
Your turtle or tortoise may very well outlive you when you provide it with the proper care, and you are making an investment of a lifetime when you accept the responsibility and joys of turtle keeping.
Many people buy a turtle on impulse and receive little, or inaccurate, care information. Consequently, many animals are abandoned, neglected, or relinquished to rescue as they become burdens. Thousands of turtles and tortoises are available for adoption from reputable rescue organizations, such as RGTTC. Some need special care but all need good loving homes.

There are hundreds of species and sub-species of turtles and tortoises still roaming our earth today, although in limited numbers, and we are most concerned with their protection and preservation. Below are links to care information for some of the more commonly-kept chelonians in our area.
There are three general groups of chelonians commonly available for adoption: box turtles, aquatic turtles, and tortoises. While some care requirements may apply to all groups, each group will also have some very different, specific needs. A predator-proof pen is recommended for any chelonian, and a safe hibernation pit is required by many.
