The Rio Grande Turtle & Tortoise Club (RGTTC) was
formed in January 1998 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We have
members throughout the state and welcome all people interested
in the care, conservation, and protection of turtles and
tortoises.
If you are thinking about acquiring a chelonian, joining
the RGTTC will be a great way to become better informed on the
proper husbandry required for the species you are interested
in. We will help you learn how to care for your new shelled
friend so you may enjoy a long and healthy life together.
Members are encouraged to participate in our regular
monthly meetings and annual field trips. Since our primary
purpose is to educate the public, we participate in regional
expos, home and garden shows, and other events. RGTTC also
hosts guest speakers who share information with members on
topics ranging from preparing turtle and tortoise-safe yards,
gardening and planting, and designing backyard aquatic
habitats to local and state laws concerning all keepers of
reptiles.
RGTTC publishes a monthly newsletter which is distributed
to members by mail or electronically. Topics include current
events and programs, seasonally relevant care tips, news of
members, and updates on our rescue and adoption program.
Hundreds of turtles and tortoises are in need of new homes
each year. Through our rescue and adoption program we assist
individuals in finding new homes for their animals, match
found animals with their owners whenever possible, and take in
injured, sick, and abandoned chelonians providing them with
appropriate care and rehabilitation. While most of the costs
associated with rehabilitation are paid for by individual
foster care-givers, any veterinarian bills or necessary
medications are paid for from membership dues. Our adoption
policy is designed to find the best new home possible for the
animal in need. We screen adoption applications carefully and
in most cases, do an on-site yard inspection to insure the
information provided is accurate.
Our largest expenses are for our newsletter costs and
veterinarian and rehabilitation expenses. Your membership dues
help offset these costs. In joining our organization, you will
enjoy the camaraderie of other turtle and tortoise
enthusiasts, share your experiences, and learn from the
experience of others.
